How to make meme text that's easy to read
Most internet memes use bold white text with a black outline. That way the text stays readable whether the photo is light or dark. This tool uses the same look by default — white text with an outline in an Impact-style font — and sizes the text to the width of your photo automatically, so you never have to fiddle with it.
Text placed on the photo can sometimes cover a face or the important part of the picture. In that case, choose Text on white bars above and below. Your photo stays untouched and white strips with black text are added above and below it, for that news-screenshot or forum-post look. If you only fill in the top text, only the top bar is added.

Shorter is funnier. The classic formula is the set-up on top and the punchline at the bottom, one line each. Press Enter in a text box to break a line exactly where you want. Frequently asked questions
Where are the meme templates?
To avoid copyright problems, CalcLab does not ship a library of meme template images. Add a photo you took yourself or one you have the right to use, and the tool puts meme text on top. Stills from TV shows, films and other people's photos belong to their owners, so take care when posting them publicly.
How does line wrapping work for long captions?
Text is first split into lines at spaces; if a single word is wider than the image, it is broken across lines character by character. To break a line exactly where you want, press Enter in the text box and the line break is kept.
How is the font size chosen?
The tool picks the largest size that fills the width of the image, then shrinks it for longer text until the top and bottom captions each fit within 30% of the image height. If it feels too big or too small, use the text size slider to scale it between 50% and 150%.
Are my memes stored on a server?
No. Opening the photo, adding the text and saving all happen inside your browser on your device; your photo is never sent to the CalcLab server.
