Why crop to a set ratio?

Photo upload fields and social networks expect particular shapes. Upload a photo with a different ratio and the site trims the edges for you, which easily cuts off the top of a head or leaves a face off-centre. Lock the ratio first and crop at the position you choose, and the photo will look exactly as intended wherever it goes.

The tool shows a small preview on screen but calculates the crop in original pixels. That means cropping never lowers the resolution, and the X, Y, Width and Height values in the boxes below are all original-pixel values. When you need to crop the same area precisely several times, just type the numbers in.

RatioCommon use
35:45Passport and visa photos (35×45 mm — UK, EU, Australia and more)
1:1Instagram square, profile pictures, US passport (2×2 in)
3:4CV and ID photos in some countries, portrait prints
4:5Instagram portrait posts (takes up the most screen space)
16:9 / 9:16YouTube thumbnails / Shorts, Reels and Stories

ID photos are usually cropped with a little space above the head and the top of the shoulders visible below the chin. Passport rules often require the face (chin to crown) to fill 70–80% of the height, so don't make the box too big. For a guided result, try the Passport Photo Maker.

To set an exact pixel size such as 413×531, follow up with Resize Image; if there is a file size limit, use Compress Image. More tools are in Image Tools.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop a photo to passport size (35×45)?

After adding a photo, press "Passport 35×45" and the box locks to that ratio. Drag inside the box to centre the face, then pull the corners so there is a little space above the head and the shoulders are included, and press Crop. If you need an exact pixel size (for example 413×531), run the cropped photo through Resize Image afterwards.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

No. The preview is just scaled down to fit your screen; the actual crop uses the original resolution. If the original is 4000×3000 and you keep half of it, the result keeps roughly 2000×1500 original pixels. Only saving as JPG re-compresses it, at 92% quality.

Can I move the crop box on my phone?

Yes. Drag inside the box with your finger to move it, and drag the round handles on the four corners to resize it. If it is hard to be precise, type numbers directly into the X, Y, Width and Height boxes below.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Everything from opening the photo to cropping and saving it happens inside the browser on your device. Nothing is sent to the CalcLab server.
