When do you need an exact image size?

Phone photos are usually more than 4000 pixels wide. Upload one as-is and the website shrinks it for you, which can crop off a face or blur text. Online applications and visa forms that specify pixel dimensions may reject a photo outright if it doesn't match. Resizing it to the exact size first avoids all of that.

Sizes in mm, cm or inches are converted to pixels at 300 dpi print resolution. One inch (25.4 mm) holds 300 pixels, so 35 mm becomes 413 pixels and 2 inches becomes 600 pixels. If a form asks for a different resolution, type those numbers straight into the width and height boxes.

When the target shape differs from your photo, pick one of three options. "Crop to fill" trims the overflowing edges around the center, "Add padding" keeps the whole photo and fills the gaps with white, and "Stretch" forces the photo to fit. For portraits, crop to fill looks the most natural.

If there is also a file size limit (say 200KB), follow up with Compress Image. To choose the crop yourself, Crop Image is easier, and for official photo sizes try the Passport Photo Maker. More tools are in Image Tools.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize a photo for a 35×45 mm passport picture?

Press the "Passport 35×45 mm" button. It fills in 413×531 pixels, which is 35×45 mm at 300 dpi print resolution. If your photo has a different shape, "Crop to fill" is selected by default and trims the extra edges around the center. To choose exactly where the face sits, crop the photo first with Crop Image, then resize it here.

Will my photo get squashed if I turn off "keep aspect ratio"?

If you enter both width and height and choose "Stretch", the photo will be distorted when its shape differs from the original. For an exact size without distortion, choose "Crop to fill" (trims some edges) or "Add padding" (adds white bars).

Does enlarging a small photo make it sharper?

The pixel count goes up, but no new detail appears, so the more you enlarge the blurrier it looks. Rather than going above 200%, try to find the original. When shrinking, the tool scales down in steps to avoid jagged edges.

Can I resize several images to the same size at once?

Yes. Add up to 50 images at once and download everything as a single ZIP. With "keep aspect ratio" on, the other side is calculated separately for each photo based on its own shape. Your photos never leave this device.
