Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is read only inside your browser on this device. Contracts, transcripts and other private documents are never sent over the internet.

No text comes out at all. Why?

A scanned or photographed PDF stores its text as an image, so there's no text to extract. In that case, convert the PDF to JPG and run the images through Image to Text (OCR). This page tells you when it detects a scanned PDF.

How do tables and two-column layouts come out?

Text is extracted in the order it's stored in the PDF, so table cells are joined with spaces and two-column pages can mix up the column order. It's fine for copying paragraphs, but if you need the exact table layout, tidy it up while looking at the original.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

PDFs that need a password to open can't be read. If you know the password, use "Print → Save as PDF" in your PDF viewer to make an unlocked copy, then add that.
