Why convert iPhone HEIC photos to JPG?
By default, iPhones save photos in HEIC (High Efficiency Image) format. It is a great format — files are roughly half the size of a JPG at the same quality — but many Windows PCs, government and job application portals and online shop review forms still can't open HEIC files or refuse them as attachments. Converting to JPG makes the photo open almost everywhere. If you copied photos from your iPhone to a computer and the files are named IMG_1234.HEIC, just drag them straight into this tool.
The same goes for PNG screenshots and images saved as WEBP. A photo stored as PNG gets very large, and WEBP sometimes won't open in older software. Converting to JPG shrinks the file and gives you the widest compatibility. Just remember that JPG cannot hold transparency, so for logos where a transparent background matters, pick the background colour yourself.
| Original format | Usually comes from | After converting to JPG |
|---|---|---|
| HEIC / HEIF | iPhone and iPad camera | Opens right away on Windows and websites |
| PNG | Screenshots, design files | Much smaller if it's a photo |
| WEBP / AVIF | Images saved from the web | Opens in older programs too |
| GIF / BMP | Reaction GIFs, old Paint files | Only the first frame is saved |
Need the JPG under a set size such as 200KB? Follow up with the image compressor. To go the other way and turn a JPG into PNG, WEBP or an animated GIF, use JPG converter. More tools are in the image tools collection.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting iPhone HEIC photos to JPG reduce quality?
At the default 90% quality you will struggle to see any difference. HEIC is simply a more efficient format than JPG, so the converted JPG is normally 1.5–2 times larger than the original HEIC file. If the size matters, lower the quality to 80% or run the result through the image compressor.
What happens to a transparent PNG background?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the colour you pick under "Background for transparent areas" (white by default). If you need to keep the transparent background, use PNG or WEBP instead of JPG.
Can I convert an animated GIF to JPG?
A JPG holds a single still image, so only the first frame of an animated GIF is saved. To pull out every frame separately you will need a video or GIF editor.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion happens entirely inside your browser on your own device, and nothing is sent to the CalcLab server. Hidden metadata such as GPS location is also stripped during conversion.
