Why convert a JPG to another format?

JPG is excellent for keeping photos small, but it loses a little quality every time it is saved and it cannot hold a transparent background. If you plan to add text or shapes and edit the image several times, convert it to PNG first — a PNG keeps exactly the same quality no matter how often you re-save it. For blogs and product pages that need to load fast, WEBP is the better choice: at similar quality it is around 25–35% smaller than JPG, so pages feel lighter.

An animated GIF is a short loop that flips through several pictures in order. Product shots from several angles, before-and-after comparisons or a quick how-to can all be bundled into one GIF that plays silently and automatically in chat apps, forums and email. A frame time of 300–700ms is comfortable to watch, and a width of about 480px uploads easily to most sites. If your photos have different aspect ratios, each one is centred on the size of photo no. 1 and the leftover space is filled with white.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. Quality lost when the image was saved as JPG cannot be restored — converting to PNG simply keeps the image exactly as it is, without further loss. The benefit is that you can edit and re-save the PNG as often as you like without it getting any worse.

How do I set the frame order of an animated GIF?

Choose "Make an animated GIF" and a numbered order list appears below. Use the arrow buttons to move a photo up or down one step, or press "Sort by name". The aspect ratio of photo no. 1 sets the size of the whole GIF.

My GIF is too big. How do I make it smaller?

Lowering the maximum width to around 320px has the biggest effect. Using fewer photos also helps. GIF is an old format limited to 256 colours per frame, so with lots of large photos the file quickly grows to several MB.

I chose WEBP but got a PNG file.

Some older versions of Safari cannot save WEBP, so the image is saved as PNG instead. The result card shows the format that was actually saved — if you really need WEBP, try again in Chrome or Edge.
