When to split a PDF
Maybe you only need to send the signature pages of a 30-page contract, or you've scanned a stack of paperwork that has to be divided up by person. Once you add a PDF, every page shows up as a small numbered preview, so you just read off the numbers and type the ranges. Pages are copied over as they are, so quality doesn't drop and you can still search and copy text just like in the original.
It also helps when an attachment is too big. If a form or email caps attachments at 10 MB, split the document into two or three parts and send them separately. Splitting every page creates lots of files, so use "Download all (ZIP)" to save them in one go.
Page numbers here mean the position of the page inside the file, not the number printed at the bottom of the page. Covers and tables of contents often make those two differ, so go by the numbers on the previews above. Each output file name also notes which original pages it contains, so they're easy to find later.

| Every page as its own file | Split every page | (nothing) |

| Everything except the cover page | Extract pages into one file | 2- |
To reorder pages or rotate upside-down scans, use Organize PDF Pages. To put split files back together, use Merge PDF. More tools are on the PDF tools page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type page ranges?
Each comma-separated group becomes its own file. Typing "1-3, 4-6, 7-" gives you three files: pages 1–3, pages 4–6, and page 7 to the end. Leave the end number off ("7-") to go to the last page, or leave the start off ("-3") to begin at page 1.
Can I pull out several pages into one file?
Choose "Extract pages into one file" and type something like "1, 3, 5-7" to get a single PDF with just those pages. Pages are added in the order you type them, so "5, 1" puts page 5 first.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
PDFs that need a password to open can't be read, so they can't be split. Open the file in your PDF viewer with the password, use "Print → Save as PDF" to make an unlocked copy, and add that copy instead.
Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?
No. Both the previews and the splitting happen inside your browser on this device, and the contents of your PDF are never sent to the CalcLab server. It's safe for sensitive documents like contracts or pay stubs.
