Remove Background
Keep just the people in your photo and erase the background. It's optimised for portraits, so object photos may be less accurate.

How the background is removed inside your browser
This tool uses Google's public MediaPipe person-segmentation model to calculate, for every pixel, how likely it is to be part of a person, then makes everything else transparent. The first time, it downloads the AI engine and model files (about 4MB in total for Fast) from Google's servers just once, and reuses the copies saved in your browser after that. Your photo itself never leaves this device.
Because the model is trained to find people, photos without people — products, food or animals — don't come out well. Even with portraits, edges can be off when the clothing matches the background, people overlap, or someone is holding an object, so zoom in and check the result before saving. Larger photos take a little longer, but the result is saved at the same width and height as the original.
| Use | Background | Suggested settings |
|---|---|---|
| Profile pictures and social media edits | Transparent PNG | Precise · soften 2–3 |
| CV, ID or passport-style photos | White (JPG) | Precise · soften 2 |
| Student or staff ID cards | Light blue or blue | Fast or Precise |
| Product or pet photos | — | Not recommended (low accuracy) |
To fit the edited photo to an official size, set the pixels with Resize Image and meet the KB limit with Compress Image — or make a complete passport photo with the Passport Photo Maker. More tools are in Image Tools.
Frequently asked questions
How can AI remove the background if my photo is never uploaded?
The first time you use it, the browser downloads Google's public person-segmentation AI model (about 4MB for Fast, about 20MB for Precise) from Google's servers once and stores it. After that, all the calculation happens on this device, so your photo itself is never sent anywhere.
Can I remove the background from product or pet photos?
The model in this tool is trained to find people, so it works best on portraits. With products, food or animals, parts of the subject may be cut off or bits of background may remain, so accuracy can drop a lot.
Can I make a white background for an ID or passport photo?
Choose "White" as the background and the area behind the person is filled with white and saved as a JPG. Light blue and blue are also available. For photos with strict rules, such as passports or national ID cards, check that the hair edges meet the official requirements — some authorities don't accept edited backgrounds at all.
The edges around the hair look unnatural.
Switch Accuracy to "Precise" to use a model that separates hair and clothing edges, which looks more natural. Raising Soften edges to 2–4 also reduces the cut-out look. If the background and clothing are similar colours, edges may still be off with any setting.
